Dealing

This weekend was pretty uneventful until Saturday night. I returned a phone call from Daddy Kiki. We talked for a while and I told him about my plans for the night. Then he revealed to me that he took himself to the emergency room the previous day because he was in pain. Now it's nothing life threatening, but there's a possibility that he might have to have surgery. I felt numb. I think this is one of the very few times where I've actually had to take care of my dad. And it scares the shit out of me. I told you how weird it was to see my dad in the recovery room after his colonoscopy. Well this is going to be even weirder. Because they're actually going to be cutting him open.

I just feel like I'm under a lot of stress. I'm trying not to be too dramatic, but it's just not fun taking care of a parent. And it makes me think of how much time we actually have with our parents. Again, DK is not going in for any major surgery and his condition is not life threatening, but he is getting up there in age. And I'm trying to wrap my brain around how much of my life do I need to live independently, and how much of my life I need to devote to my dad. I already feel a little guilty for leaving Texas and moving to Michigan. But that's something that I needed to do for my own sanity. Now I'm considering leaving the country after grad school. Should I go? Will I be too far away from my dad? How much do I need to sacrifice to be there for him. These are the things I'm thinking about.

On a brighter note I think I'm going to start taking Hoodia. I know absolutely nothing about it, but I hear it doesn't give you the jitters like regular diet pills, and I feel that it's diet season for me. I'll let you know how it goes on the Hoodia.

These are a Few of My Favorite Things

My baby's gone. Well, not really. He leaves at 5P to go to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family. I think he's finally realizing how much it's going to suck with me not being around. He's such a silly man. He pretty much wouldn't let me out of bed this morning because he knew that he wouldn't see me for another 5 days. It's cool tho. I'm actually excited about having so much 'me' time. I plan to not shower, watch Big Love, LOTR, and work on my papers. And I'm going to cook. I've decided on my Thanksgiving meal. I'm making Turkey & Cranberry Ravioli. I'm not a huge fan of Giada De Laurentiis. I think it's cause I don't like how perfect her boobs look when she's cooking. And the fact that Baloo looks at her boobs when she cooks. But I thought this was the perfect recipe to put me in the Thanksgiving mood.

I know I was asked what I want for Christmas. I want a lot of things actually. Mainly I want a new wallet from Kate Spade. The one I want isn't online, but it's basically the pocketbook design. I've had my current wallet since I was 16, and frankly, it's not falling apart. I just need an upgrade. I think Baloo may be getting me ski clothes for Christmas. I'm super excited to learn to ski with him. I think it'll make the winter much more enjoyable. I guess I can tell y'all what I plan to get DK and Baloo.

The Week From Hell

It has been a crazy week. Probably one of the craziest of my working career. Wish I could go into detail, but I can’t. However, I will say that I worked 12 hour days most of last week.

Aside from me working hard and not eating (which resulted in some awesome weight loss) I got to meet Baloo’s brother. I haven’t decided on a nickname for Baloo’s brother, so for the time being, we’ll call him Dr. Baloo, since he’s a PhD and all.

Dr. Baloo came over to my house on Tuesday and I made Smoked Chicken, Corn Pudding, Sautéed Spinach, and Key Lime Pie. Everything was a hit. Dr. Baloo was very nice. I’m not used to having siblings, so it was interesting to see the two of them interact. Dr. Baloo is like a more mature version of Baloo with blonde hair. It was pretty weird.

So anyway, Baloo spent the weekend with his family in Dayton, OH where they went down to celebrate Dr. Baloo’s wife’s birthday since she was all alone for a medical rotation. I was invited, but because I was working 12 hour days, I couldn’t get away to join them. I hoped I made a good impression and I kept asking Baloo what Dr. Baloo had to say about me. Apparently he called me crazy (because I was so anal about the food being perfect and everyone having a good time) and that I reminded him of his wife. Which I guess is a good thing. However, I’m so vain that I thought that they should spend the entire weekend talking about me and thinking about me. I wanted frequent updates from Baloo on what his family thought of me. Turns out, they think I’m a fun, crazy girl and they like me. So I guess I couldn’t ask for more.

In other news, I had to make an emergency call to Kipper last night to discuss something that Daddy Kiki said to me that kinda disturbed me. I called Daddy Kiki last night to talk about the nice time I had at the driving range and I mentioned that Dr. Baloo and his wife will be moving from San Francisco to San Antonio in the next few months so Dr. Baloo’s wife can start her residency. I commented to Daddy Kiki that it will be an adjustment for Dr. Baloo seeing as he’s from the country here in Michigan and he wants to buy a house on a couple of acres and Texas doesn’t exactly have that type of living in the cities. It’s very suburban. Daddy Kiki’s comment, “Well, they should feel comfortable since there are a lot of Hispanics in San Antonio.”

What? Come again? I told Daddy Kiki that I didn’t appreciate his comment and I don’t think they’re the type of people to base their comfort level on the type of people they are surrounded by. I asked him how we segued from talking about the amount of land they’ll live on to the type of people they’ll be around. He was confused. I was confused. He told me to forget about the whole thing. O.K. Whatever.

So I had to call Kipper to commiserate. Apparently it was racist weekend and neither Kipper or I got the memo. He told me a story about having a house guest who said inappropriate things. When Kipper told a story about someone asking a dumb question in class (Kipper is the smartest, thinnest, prettiest one in Community College finishing up some prereqs for nursing school) the house guest asked if the person asking the dumb question was black. Thankfully, Kipper had the balls to stand up to his house guest.

So that’s what I’ve been dealing with these past two weeks. Working my ass off, my boyfriend’s brother’s visit, and my racially incentive father. I hope this week is so much better!

Happy Two Days Before Kwanza

Hey Kids! I figured I'd write a post while I was here in Texas so I won't have a super long post once I get back to town. Things are going ok. Daddy Kiki and I are ok. We're not having a rocking time together, but there haven't been any fights yet, so you pretty much have to count you blessings. Let me take you back to the trouble I had getting to Texas in the first place.

Baloo and I celebrated Christmas on Thursday night. We had a lovely time. I ended up getting him a custom framed photo of one of the pictures he took while he was in Yosemite this past November. I also got him the 4th season of Family Guy. He got me a few pairs of socks (we have a thing about me not having any funky socks) as well as the game
Cranium for when we have our game nights and a cool fondue set. We later went to dinner at a local mexican restaurant and had margairtas. It was a fantastic Christmas. Cut to 1:00 a.m. when I get a call from Orbitz telling me my flight out of Lansing to Chicago was cancelled. No explaination. Just that my flight was cancelled. We then spent the next hour on hold with both Orbitz and United trying to find out how I was going to get home for Christmas. I guess since I was flying to Chicago, it was too close to the Denver blizzard, so they just cancelled my flight. Thanks. Orbitz offered to refund my money and let me know that the next flight out of town wouldn't be until Christmas Day! Eek! So after being on hold with United for an hour, the very nice lady said I could get a flight out of Detroit at 6:00 a.m. Baloo, being the magnificent man that he is, volunteered to drive me to Detroit. We only had an hour of sleep and left the house at 4:00 a.m. to make my flight.

So now I've been home for a couple days. Things are so different in Texas. I went shopping tonight and they were playing religious holiday music. Also, the raido stations say 'Merry Christmas & Happy Holiday." I like that. Because even if you want to be all politically correct, you have to recognize that Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. And people shouldn't feel like they're doing anything wrong by saying the words, "Merry Christmas."

It's also rainy here. It rained all day. It's cool. Daddy Kiki and I are going to watch movies all night anyway and eat lots of food. Then tomorrow we'll open presents, have a traditional Christmas meal (with duck instead of Turkey) and I'm not sure what else.

Merry Christmas to all y'all! I hope everyone has a nice time with family. Or at least I hope you'll be plenty drunk!

Daddy Kiki, Meet Baloo

Daddy Kiki met Baloo tonight. Well, he saw a picture of him. Daddy Kiki has always loved taking pictures of me. Being an only child and him being a photographer, he always wanted to take pictures of me as a child, and I grew to love being photographed. So, whenever I take pictures, Daddy Kiki usually likes me to share. Especially if the pictures are of me. Since Baloo took some pictures of me all dressed up before the auction on Friday night, I decided to share them with Daddy Kiki. Baloo and I took a couple pictures together and they were in the mix too.

Now, Daddy Kiki knows that I date white guys. He’s never met any of my boyfriends because none of them have been significant enough or stuck around long enough to get an introduction. But I am good about dropping hints. Like when I dated Smitty and I told Daddy Kiki that we went to a hockey game and Smitty explained the rules to me since he played hockey in high school. What black guys do you know who play hockey?

So I was a little nervous about showing Daddy Kiki Baloo’s picture. Previously we had just talked about Baloo. I told him that Baloo is getting his masters in trees. So obviously he knew Baloo probably wasn’t black. It’s not a typical thing black people really get masters in. So before, Baloo was just an idea. For all he knew, I made him up. Which he wouldn’t really put past me. So I sent Daddy Kiki my pictures. His response, “Beautiful pictures.” I’m a bit relieved. He’s prone to write me long drawn out emails when he thinks I’m doing something inappropriate (drinking too much) but he was short and sweet and simple. And the pictures were beautiful. Score one for Team Kiki! Next task: convincing Baloo he’s not an atheist.
